Information

The twin crises of overconsumption in high-income countries and persistent hunger in least developed countries demand a fundamental transformation of global food systems. Rising demand for meat and dairy—particularly in wealthier nations—has placed unsustainable pressure on the climate, land, and human health. Even with deep emissions cuts elsewhere, climate goals cannot be met without changing how protein is produced and consumed. Protein diversification—reducing animal protein in high-income countries while expanding access to healthy, climate-friendly protein in lower-income regions—is a critical solution.

Shifting crops from animal feed to direct human consumption could increase available food calories by up to 70% and feed billions more people, while freeing vast areas of agricultural land. However, current approaches are fragmented. High-tech alternative proteins are often perceived in the Global South as elitist, while food security and farmer wellbeing are frequently overlooked. A just transition requires combining alternative protein innovation with plant-rich diets and affordable staples. Encouragingly, international momentum is growing, with governments now coordinating toward a global coalition and fund for protein diversification.
