Information

This workshop explores the key stages, opportunities and challenges involved in taking an innovation from laboratory development through demonstration and full-scale production to market adoption. Experts from NIZO and Cibus Nexum will bring together perspectives from across the innovation ecosystem, including investors, founders, spin-outs, scale-ups, regulators, multinationals, Contract Research Organizations (CROs) and Contract Development and Manufacturing Organizations (CDMOs). Designed to encourage open discussion, knowledge sharing and new collaborations, the workshop will help participants better anticipate and address the technical and commercial challenges involved in scaling innovation across the new foods, beverages and ingredients sector.

What you will take away:

• A clearer understanding of the roadmap from laboratory development to commercial-scale production
• Insight into the key technical hurdles and opportunities at different stages of scale-up
• Perspectives from across the ecosystem on what successful scaling requires
• Practical considerations for anticipating and addressing scale-up challenges
• Opportunities to exchange knowledge and build new collaborations

NizoStand 27NIZO provides food and biotechnology research, process development and food grade pilot-scale capabilities, helping companies investigate and demonstrate how ingredients and production technologies behave under realistic manufacturing conditions and in food applications. Its expertise spans fermentation, protein functionality, food safety, process technology, health, digestion and nutrition, sensory science and scale-up. Within the Dutch National Growthfund Cellular Agriculture Netherlands and co-funded by OostNL and NIZO, NIZO is realizing an open access upscaling facility on the Food Innovation Park grounds specifically for product and process validation of (precision) fermentation technologies in food and ingredients. The Biotechnology Fermentation Factory (BFF) will range food grade screening and upscaling facilities from 1L - 10,000L, with direct connect to NIZO's food grade pilot plant for downstream processing and analytics. The BFF is planned to be operational in 2027. Recent activity of NIZO and BFF includes participation in ECOFERM, a Dutch consortium exploring continuous fermentation with in-situ biomass retention, as well as biotechnology infrastructure development. NIZO and BFF are also collaborating with Cibus Nexum on a workshop (Day 1, 11:30) examining the technical and commercial journey from laboratory innovation to industrial production. Visitors can discuss experimental development, pilot trials, process optimization and the evidence needed before committing to larger-scale manufacturing. Make sure to visit our booth and connect with us to discuss ideas and opportunities!
